330KV Nigeria - Niger – Togo/Benin - Burkina Interconnection Project: WAPP Northcore Project
Transmission
Description
The project envisages the construction of a 330 kV double circuit high voltage transmission line of approximate length 880 km, with associated substations, that shall emanate from Birnin Kebbi (Nigeria) to Ouagadougou (Burkina) through Zabori (Niger), Gorou Banda (Niger), and Ouaga East (Burkina) among other locations. The project also includes the construction of 33 km of 225 kV high voltage transmission line in Burkina from Ouaga East to intersect with the Ghana – Burkina Interconnector at point PA5.
Objective
To interconnect the networks of Nigeria, Niger, Togo/Benin and Burkina for exchange of power among these countries and beyond.
Project Status
This project is in its implementation phase and financing of US$568.2 million equivalent has been completely secured following adoption of pre-investment studies that were funded by NEPAD-IPPF. The entire project is being implemented by a single Project Management Unit with the support of an Owners’ Engineer. The procurement of works for the entire project is almost completed and its commissioning is envisaged in 2023.
